I want fanfic that includes the fact that you can have/have previously had feelings for or relationships with other people. Because these characters are all grown men and women with history and baggage and life and relationships are complicated!

I want Jack/Daniel fic where its recognised that they were married to Sara and to Sha’re, and that those relationships were just as valid.

Or where Jack is in a relationship with Daniel but his feelings for Sam (or hers for him) are recognised without it being this huge angsty teenage girl type reaction.

Or where Jack is in a relationship with Sam but his feelings for Daniel (or Daniel’s for him) are recognised.

Or maybe he was in a relationship with the other prior and it didn’t work out.

Because hey, your feelings for person A are still valid and don’t go away, just because you’re in a relationship with person B. It doesn’t mean you’re cheating, it means youre human and humans are complicated and healthy relationships talk about these things

Or Jack/Sam where she’s wary about being in a relationship because of her experiences with Jonas and Pete. Or maybe feels she can’t measure up to his memories of the mother of his child.

WITHOUT BASHING OTHER RELATIONSHIPS OR PAIRINGS OR CHARACTERS!

And fic that actually deals the age difference between Jack and Sam or Daniel. And the command structure. Or both!

Weirdly enough, I've been sort of having a conversation about this with a friend I met along time ago in another fandom and where we both share a "new" one. In both cases, she ships an M/F pairing and I ship a M/M pairing.

We were talking about how it's possible to write a non-canon slash pairing without demonizing or handwaving their (often canon) relationships with others.

I always put "character bashing" in my DNW list.

You’re so right! I tend to do things like that in my fic (where I’m able to anyway)

I think this kind of fic is what a fandom can mature into, but it's very hard to find it in a bright, shiny, brand new fandom, where we find instead the "evil bitch ex died in fiery car crash, good riddance" trope instead. I noticed in the later years of popslash that the stories began to have far more threesomes, far more of this kind of acknowledgment that people can love more than once and that wives people who aren't part of the OTP no longer have to be demonized. It's nice.
