Like yesterday, I'm posting early on this. It's unlikely I'll have the time for writing while I'm away, so, although there might be a few drabbles, I don't expect to make much progress. This month I've written about 4.5K words, bringing my total to 37.5K, which, hopefully I will make up for over the summer.

For [community profile] allbingo  Flower Challenge, using the Dancing with Daffodils prompts, I wrote four double drabbles, A Spring Morning in the Garden, an ACD Holmes retirement story.

And [community profile] whatif_au  is running a bingo challenge again this year, so I've written Hudson's Modelling Agency - The New Models a BBC Sherlock/Hamlet crossover and Joining A Band which is a Hobbit movie story.

And here's my banner from last month's allbingo:

Beast and I just watched 'Smoke', a series on (I think) Apple TV about an arson investigator and a police detective who have a couple of arsonists to chase.

Taron Egerton is really, really good in it.

Early, but I'm away for over a week, so I won't finish any more of my current projects.

So today was a cinema trip so this is a post about that.

When I got to town I only went in a few places. I went in Poundland to get lightbulbs (the one at the top of the stairs has gone) then Aldi to get pasta (I picked up a leaflet and the new pasta sounded nice.) Then popped in Asda. I had some luck again! They had the new Mandalorian visual guide, which I didn’t even know was out, and it was half off! So naturally I grabbed it. And they also had copies of Project Hail Mary so I got that too.

I read some of the Mandalorian visual guide between films and I’m so looking forward to going through it properly.its hefty covering all three seasons of the show (plus some of Book Of Boba Fett) and it starts with a new map. Damn I love it when a book starts with a galaxy map, I love looking through it, spotting familiar plants and also seeing things and wanting to know what they are,

The trailers before Exit 8 were a bit puzzling, in that only one was a horror.

Micheal: A new one, again it looks like it’s well done but not something I’d go watch
Power Ballad: A few with Paul Rudd and one of the Jonas brothers. It seems the latter stole a song the former wrote and made it a hit
Two women: A French film, about two women that seem to be unhappy with their lives. Probably won’t see feels it could be funny
Backrooms: I’d seen this trailer online but ahh seeing it on a big screen (twice!) was so good especially since it’s confirmation we’re getting it! I’m so sold on the concept of a strange space, plus it’s part found footage which I love, plus it meant I got to see the Backrooms twink on the big screen

The trailers for Undertone were pretty much the ones I’ve seen for recent horror things (with Undertone switched out for Backrooms): Scary Movie, Passenger, Obsession, The Mummy, Hokum.

Thoughts on both under the cut.

Next cinema trip should be Saturday for record store day but I’m not sure what. I was hoping to see the new Mummy film, but the earliest showing is 3 and the films before that are kinda… lacking. I could see Mario Galaxy again, or Project Hail Mary, or I could see the magic faraway tree but I’m not sure. We’ll see.

After that it’s Hokum, then The Sheep Detectives.

Now I’m gonna bundle up a bit.i had considered watching something but I don’t feel I have the energy.

Fandom: Hockey RPF
Characters/Pairings: Sidney Crosby/Evgeni (Geno) Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin, Shea Weber, Joe Thornton
Rating: Explicit
Length: 15,934
Content Notes: no AO3 warnings apply

Themes: Arranged marriage, First time, AU: royalty, Secret identity

Summary: It’s actually his father who suggests it.

“Take the rest of the summer for yourself,” he says. “Do something fun.”

“Fun,” Sidney repeats blankly.

Reccer's Notes: I'm into hockey fics now! This is a classic, already reccd here ages ago and worth revisiting. It's a royalty AU with added hockey, which is where Sid meets Geno. There's a fun, hot and charming initial romance, then Sid has to get on with his life of obligations, including the frustrating search for a suitable royal-lineage husband to cement political ties. Ultimately, love wins, of course, and it's a satisfying, well written story.

End of Year Goal Review 2025/26

Slightly early, but I've basically achieved everything I had in my goals for 2025/26.

Goal No 1: Do a Themed Monthly Post
Posting Views from the Window every month has been fun and in particular interesting as it's shown the change in the trees over the year.  My last post will be at the end of the month, so I can include views from the upcoming holiday.

Goal No 2: Accept the Unexpected
We decided at the beginning of March we'd go away for a couple of nights and would take my car.  Unfortunately when I got in the car that morning a warning light came on.  So we had to hurriedly move everything over to J's car.  Which worked fine in the end, and the car was soon sorted once we came home - no time to do anything that morning.  And The Daughter and I have booked a holiday for July 2027.  I mentioned it to her as being of interest, she agreed, so we booked - all within a day.

Goal No 3: To Embrace My Personal Interests
That's gone well, although I do sometimes look at my Library Want To Read list and wonder.  However, it's entirely up to me and if I want to do some of the Goodreads Seasonal Challenge, then I shall.  And I have bought rather a lot of audiobooks from a recent Audible sale, but I'll get round to listening to them :)

So yes, it's been a good year.  I don't always achieve all my goals, but it is pleasing when I do, especially when I will carry on with the ideas behind the goals.

The case of the missing notifications

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

So yesterday was the trip to Birmingham to see Death On The Nile.

Going round the town beforehand was kinda eh, mostly due of time/money. Not helped by mum seeing a trail thing for pet food at the station and getting us signed up for it before realising how much it was (trial price was just under £20, which is half off which is crazy). I’d have probably gone to the big hmv (I was looking for something in the sale, the bullring hmv didn’t have it and it’s out of stock online) but being with mum made me reluctant cause of how far away it was and how achy she’s been lately.

I did check in the odeon for the Mario luma things but alas, they had none. (Same with McDonald’s they didn’t have Mario toys, despite me asking specifically before paying for them). We only went in McDonald’s cause mum had a voucher but ugh. The usual veggie thing I used to have isn’t there anymore and I had a mcplant and hated it. Ugh.

For the forbidden planet by the theatre I got the new Maul comic, plus a Fantastic Four First Steps one. (Alas no Strange Buildings, or Exquisite Corpses 11 but I still need to catch up on it)

Before the show we picked up a theatre guide and there’s an Open Day next month. It’s on free comic book day so I booked us in so we’ll have that to do. (It’s a little vague on the details but should be interesting.) also in there were getting Annie with La Voix (I dunno if I’m interested enough to see it but it’s pretty cool) and Paranormal Activity (I’m kinda curious, like how do you make a found footage film a stage performance?) it’s gonna be there late October, with a ghost tour thing after some performances so I might try for it.

The show itself was really good! It was done by the same people that did Murder On The Orient Express, with the same guy playing Poirot (and there’s a new adaption by them of The Hollow which is good to have a lesser adapted work). The staging was really well done as they’d got it set up as two levels, so it was set up like two decks of a ship. At first it looked like the upper floor was just a walkway with railings, but it could be opened up into a full room too! That was really cool.

The story mostly plays out how previous adaptions were done (I say it that way cause I’ve not read the book yet) but there were some notable differences. The first was the boat trip also included the return of a sarcophagus (a prop which looked rather nice). This meant that there was a scene of Linnet getting trap inside it after posing for a photo inside. (I’m guessing that this was done as it’s difficult to have a side trip to to ruins with masonry to fall on stage.) It did work out pretty well.

The second was Salome Otterbourne, who was a former novelist now attempting to be an actor. She also had a lil of the kleptomaniac traits of Marie from other adaptions (her and Miss Bowers were some of the characters omitted). Most notable was that she didn’t die. In fact only Linnet was the only victim. That did mean the second half did feel a bit more streamlined, but it still worked well.

(Oddly though there were lots of seats, we were the only ones on our section of the row and no one was in front which felt odd)

On the train journey I finished off Hawkins Horrors. As a whole it was pretty good! Anthologies of spooky stories (which this was) tend to be a mixed bag but they were all pretty strong. Even the weakest one (Lucas’ Two Lunches) was still pretty good. I wish Steve and Robin each had their own stories instead of sharing one (even though it was one of the good ones!).

When I got back, after watching Taskmaster, I got hit by a wave of tiredness which ended up adding sadness which… eh wasn’t great, I put on an audio to distract but couldn’t focus, then zoned out and went to bed.

Alas this morning we went to see if the ducklings were there but no sign of them. I’m assuming they were in the reeds hiding, since we didn’t see any female ducks either. It’s a shame cause I took my pad for pics but I had a feeling I’d not see them cause of that.

(I also didn’t watch The Copenhagen Test Wednesday, getting sidetracked by qsmp so that’s something I’ve gotta watch)

Next few days/week I wanna get back to watching stuff. I’ve got a few things I wanna finish (Heated Rivalry, The Beauty, The Amazing Digital Circus) before starting other things. I also wanna finish Welcome To Derry and get back to American Horror Story, both of which I’ve put off. Maybe when my mindset is better, I know I’ll need it for Welcome To Derry.

I also wanna try and set a day for blu ray watching but we’ll see if I can settle on a day.

Now though I’m gonna bundle, maybe ponder and game.
